Pressure

through of eyes of a Geography and Physics Major , there is many ways of explaining one word...

P R E S S U R E

In physics

Pressure (symbol: p) is the force per unit area applied on a surface in a direction perpendicular to that surface.

a8aa98e9fd48887b3e8f9c61b030f3ee
where:
p is the pressure
F is the normal force
A is the area.

Pressure is transmitted to solid boundaries or across arbitrary sections of fluid normal to these boundaries or sections at every point. It is a fundamental parameter in thermodynamics and it is conjugate to volume.

And in Geography,

But just how much pressure is pressure enough to crack someone ? Or how much pressure is pressure to groom someone ?

barometer
Is there such a thing as a human barometer ?

AND

Why does pressure have to be a serious and stressful thing ?

bloodpressure

There is a lot of pressure at work. No doubt there is pressure in every job, in every day life and people grow with pressure. Sometimes, all you really need to do is to take a step back from reality, listen to an aiesec song or two, dance with it, sing your heart out, and email good friends. Thanks Kimchi for yours !

Changes

changes

As I was walking to work, I noticed something different.

For many many months, I did not have to have to take an elevator.

Today, I noticed that I was sharing the little cubicle with 8 others, and the buttons on the panel lit up like a christmas tree.
If I recall correctly, 29,31,32,34,36,41 and 43 ! That is a lot of 'doors opening and closing' for one morning !

As much as I hate to the be the last one to get out of the elevator... I do really enjoy the view at the top and from the top.
Once again, my personal philosophy holds true :

the climb to the top might not be an easy one but the view is sure worth the climb.

UN and World Cup

I found this post from AIESEC Victoria's blog. It's a letter from Kofi Annan about the World Cup. Read the letter below.

***********************************
Kofi A. Annan
SATURDAY, JUNE 10, 2006
UNITED NATIONS, New York

You may wonder what a secretary general of the United Nations is doing writing about football. But in fact, the World Cup makes us at the United Nations green with envy.

As the pinnacle of the only truly global game, played in every country by every race and religion, it is one of the few phenomena as universal as theUnited Nations.

You could even say it's more universal. FIFA has 207 members; we have only191.
But there are far better reasons to be envious.

First, the World Cup is an event in which everybody knows where their team stands, and what it did to get there. They know who scored and how and in what minute of the game; they know who missed the open goal; they know who saved the penalty.

I wish we had more of that sort of competition in the family of nations. Countries openly vying for the best standing in the table of respect for human rights, and trying to outdo one another in child survival rates or enrolment in secondary education. States parading their performance for all the world to see. Governments being held accountable for what actions led them to that result.

Second, the World Cup is an event that everybody on the planet loves talking about, dissecting what their team did right, and what it could have done differently - not to mention the other side's team.

People sitting in cafés anywhere from Buenos Aires to Beijing debate the finer points of games endlessly, revealing an intimate knowledge not only oftheir own national teams but of many of the others too, expressing themselves on the subject with as much clarity as passion. Normally tongue-tied teenagers suddenly become eloquent, confident, and dazzlingly analytical experts.

I wish we had more of that sort of conversation in the world at large. Citizens consumed by the topic of how their country could do better on the Human Development Index, or in reducing the amount of carbon emissions or the number of new HIV infections.

Third, the World Cup is an event that takes place on a level playing field, where every country has a chance to participate on equal terms. Only two commodities matter in this game: talent and teamwork.

I wish we had more levelers like that in the global arena. Free and fair exchanges without the interference of subsidies, barriers or tariffs. Every country getting a real chance to field its strengths on the world stage.

Fourth, the World Cup is an event that illustrates the benefits of cross-pollination between peoples and countries. More and more national teams now welcome coaches from other countries, who bring new ways of thinking and playing. The same goes for the increasing number of players who, between World Cups, represent clubs away from home. They inject new qualities into their new team, grow from the experience, and are able to contribute even more to their home side when they return. In the process, they often become heroes in their adopted countries - helping to open hearts and broaden minds.

I wish it were equally plain for all to see that human migration in general can create triple gains - for migrants, for their countries of origin and for the societies that receive them. That migrants not only build better lives for themselves and their families, but are also agents of development - economic, social and cultural - in the countries they go and work in, and in the homelands they inspire through newly won ideas and know-how when they return.

For any country, playing in the World Cup is a matter of profound national pride. For countries qualifying for the first time, such as my native Ghana, it is a badge of honor. For those who are doing so after years of adversity, such as Angola, it provides a sense of national renewal. And for those who are currently driven by conflict, like Ivory Coast, but whose World Cup team is a unique and powerful symbol of national unity, it inspires nothing less than the hope of national rebirth.

Which brings me to what is perhaps most enviable of all for us at the United Nations: The World Cup is an event in which we actually see goals being reached.I'm not talking only about the goals that a country scores; I also mean the most important goal of all - being there, being part of the family of nations and peoples, celebrating our common humanity.

I'll try to remember that when Ghana plays Italy in Hannover on June 12. Of course, I can't promise I'll succeed.

In the spirit of world cup...

For 30 days much of the planet will be glued to radios and TV’s as a festival of football unites diverse people from Angola to Australia and from Sweden to Saudi Arabia.

But how do you choose who to cheer for when your own team isn’t playing (or if they didn’t qualify)? What about the coolest flag design (probably Brazil)? Maybe the best holiday destination or food (got to be Italy)?

Many people will cheer for the underdog - Togo has never qualified before - or because the team contain players from their club team. Or perhaps you go for more political criteria, perhaps by not supporting countries involved in the war in Iraq or with a bad human rights record?

How about supporting the team that gives the most aid to poor countries? Perhaps cheering on the country that spends the most on healthcare? Or booing the country that spends the most on weapons?

At WDM they have produced this handy tool to help you choose who to shout for when your own team isn’t on the pitch. Just click below on the teams playing in the match you are about to watch and see how they score on ten different supportability criteria. You can find out more about the criteria by clicking on the banner above !

I stole this link from my home LC's blog and WDM's page but its is such a good post that I have to blog it to help spread awareness..it makes sense right ?

Too many things

A torn Cornea

yup... that thin piece of membrane in your eyes. Credit and Kudos to the guy that refused to sell me my new supply of contacts lenses. First, he made sure that i have to go through my eye checkup for new supply, then, he insisted that i make 2 trips to the washroom to remove my contacts in a clean fashionable manner, and he did not sell me out for a small amount of commission, he refused to hand over my contacts when he found something not quite right with my right eye.

so.. later that night, i had much difficulty sleeping and much difficulty keeping my eyes closed or open. geeeez.. i admitted myself to A & E department at the Singapore General Hospital this morning and found out that my cornea in my right eye has abrasions and i will have to keep off contacts for a couple of weeks.

Also, i have to dillgently put eye drops in my eye every 3 hours, that means i have to get up in the middle of the night.
to be honest, this incident has been quite an experience for me.... hee hee...

A week at my new job !

All i can say for now is that i work at a very cool place, 43rd floor over looking the Singapore Skyline, Singapore River and another window even faces the National Stadium. I am lucky to have a window view seat...
I love the atmosphere at work. Loud and Bright Shirts Friday ? I bet my company is the only one that does it !
People are fun and they love to crack silly jokes. Even on a sleepy raint tuesday morning.

Celine : Good Morning !
Mr K : Good Morning !
Celine : I didnt see you yesterday, out for a meeting ?
Mr K : No, i wasnt feeling well
Celine : Awww.. what happened ?
Mr K : I was throwing up all day, I think I've got cancer !
Celine : Laughs.. Dont be silly.

Books and Jet Lagged ?

Bookshelves Ref 1-053_main

I NEED BOOKSHELVES !
I am so desperately in need of bookshelves, I need a proper place to keep and display my books ! I bought 46 books over the last year and I need a place to store them ! I need more space ! I wish I have my very own library.. with rows and rows of shelves... the musty smell of books, the sound of dry pages flipping, the joy of reading my books, discovering new information and sastifaction of arranging them ! I LURVE LURVE my books ! Ha Ha Ha.

And i need walk into my room with rows and rows of book.... AH... the comfort of books.

I feel CAFFINATED !

9949CantSleep

Funny how I am fighting to fall asleep at night. Over the past few days, I have not been able to fall asleep. Not till 3 or 4 am ! I am seriously in need of a time change, the flu bug caught up with me due to lack of sleep during sun shinning hours and at night, I am fit as a fiddle..... Something is seriously wrong with me.

A quick search on google gave me some reasons why we cannot fall asleep ( I found this on a health page for kids and adults )

1 ) Bedtime Fears - Afraid of the Dark, Monsters under the bed.. I only have books, no monsters, have reading lamp too !
2 ) Nightmares ? Ha Ha Ha..... I have them in the day time.
3 ) Worry and Stress .... Nope, none at all....
4 ) Big Changes in Life
5 ) Comfort - too hot, cold, bed crowded with stuff toys... Nope, nope and Nope ! been sleeping in this room for a year now !

and they gave solutions too !

1 ) dont exercise 4 hours before bedtime.
2 ) try a peaceful mind exercise ! ( are you kidding me ? dont get me started ! I will be up ALL night thinking ! )
3 ) dont sleep with a pet ( dont have one, unless sister is considered but she has her room ! )
4 ) talk to a psychologist about stress or sadness.... ( hmmm.... )
5 ) Use sunlight to set your biological clock - As soon as you get up in the morning, go outside and turn your face to the sun for 15 minutes ( this is the funniest one ! )
6 ) Only use your bed for sleeping. Refrain from using your bed to watch TV, pay bills, do work or reading. So when you go to bed your body knows it is time to sleep.
7 ) refrain from Caffine... ( I dont drink coffee, no Tea for me after 8pm ! )

The way I see it, I think number 6 makes sense. I do watch TV, pay bills, do work, study, and read on my bed. Even write my blog ! This is bad !!!!!!!!

This is a random post at 3.14am Singapore Time, I think I am HYPER at this crazy hour. MAYBE I am JET LAGGED, even though I have not left the country at all.
Maybe its me going back in time to student days.. when I just got to finish the assignment !

STRANGE !

OK. I admit its a tough quiz

hee hee... ok. i admit that its a tough quiz.......

Different

Different
different

I just find this picture really funny, growing up in Singapore, we do our best to 'fit in' try not to stand out too much is what we were told. People frown at 'different-ness' It was a nice change when I went to Canada and society accepts people who are different and unique... How two cultures are different !

Its funny also how I am different in different groups of people. I do not have multiple personality disorder but I just react differently in different groups of friends. I speak differently, I behave differently, I party differently maybe I even laugh differently !

Maybe because I grew up with different cliques of friends. Secondary School bunch, AIESEC bunch, CJ Bunch, University Bunch, AC Boys, people from work, my clients, my family, my closer friends. And even within the groups themselves, they see me differently. Some know me better, some understand my philosophy better, some know my goals and dreams and some are friends that you don't see very often. And maybe as a result, i behave differently in my different groups of friends.

You might not believe it, some people know me as a quiet person. Ha Ha Ha.

There is a little discomfort in knowing that I behave differently among my friends. Its funny how when I am introduced to new friends in AIESEC or Work or School. I am more than happy but when new friends intrudes on a close friends gathering. Its strange and I totally detest it. I like to keep my close friends in a close tight circle, the original few, nothing more, nothing less. Gossips dont get out, opinions and views are kept within the circle, we get to tease each other about the many strange, embarassed moments that has happened to us over the years.

Ha Ha Ha, out of boredom, I created this test, how well do you know me ?
take the quiz !

Since I am on the topic of DIFFERENT. Here's my favourite quote on originality.

“All good things which exist are the fruits of originality.”
John Stuart Mill quotes (English exponent of Utilitarianism, ethical theorist, Philosopher, Economist and Logician. 1806-1873)
