Chromosomes and Coffee Club

A night out with the Barker Boys, a lesson from Julian, our 'life science geek' and a 'suanning'( English = tease / make fun off ) session between PJ and Julian.

Chromosomes
noun: a threadlike body in the cell nucleus that carries the genes in a linear order

chromosome_3d[1]

Chromosomes are compact spools of DNA. If you were to stretch out all the DNA from one of your cells, it would be over 3 feet (1 meter) long from end to end! You can think of chromosomes as "DNA packages" that enable all this DNA to fit in the nucleus of each cell. Normally, we have 46 of these packages in each cell; we received 23 from our mother and 23 from our father.

There are 22 numbered pairs of chromosomes, plus two sex chromosomes. The sex chromosomes in females are two X chromosomes and in males they are an X and a Y chromosome.

There is one exception to the rule that every cell contains 23 pairs of chromosomes. These are the reproductive cells, or more specifically the egg and sperm cells. They each contain one-half of the normal number, or 23 chromosomes instead of 23 pairs. This means that the union of an egg and sperm cell will create a new cell with just the right amount of genetic material for a new person. You have inherited one chromosome of each pair, or half of your genetic material from each of your parents. Each of your children will inherit one of each pair from you.

Maybe.. Just maybe in the future, we will see an 'ad' like this !

how long

I don't like posting lyrics on my blog. The reason is simple, my blog is not a lyrics database BUT once in a while a really nice song comes along with really nice lyrics... For the past few weeks, my ears are GLUED to spanish songs and Corrine May.

Part of a verse and the chorus I REALLY REALLY love..makes a lot of sense on the way I view relationships.... Its is soooo me... drop all my defenses and love someone... sometimes to the point of no return... hahahahah.. but i learn, still I relate to this song so much !

Stay on the road

Hearts are made to be broken
They get stronger  by the day
I'll take a chance and drop all my defenses
Just to hear you say

How long is the road
How long is the ride
How long is the darkness till we get to the light
Go easy on me
Cause you already know
No matter the distance
I'll stay on the road to your heart...

My friday night.

I have music at work ! I brought my speakers into work, plugged in my ipod and enjoyed a streamless flow of good music at work all day.. Considering I spend so much time at work... I deserve good music to go with 'hard work'. My boss understands the importance of music to me !

I googled for an image of 'music'. i found this :

music

Dinner with Dad and Mum : BBQ Stingray with Sambal Chilli ! Yummy... ah the comforts of Asian food.

11pm : Late night supper with Colin... we came to the conclusion that the sugar cane juice at Blk 85 Bedok is not that good. But according to Colin, the 'chokg' - teochew porridge is fantastic. More chit-chat about life.... I learnt that Colin can be really scary when he is fierce when he is angry.... But he is a good guy, helping me avoid the cockcroaches.. YUCKS ! Opps... its 1am.. Better go home and get some sleep. Got to get up early...

Sunday is East Coast Park Day ! Cycling anyone ?

Laughter and Hand Shadows.

Last night, 9.45pm : I am soooooo tired after work but I took the bus to meet Jatin, Cass, Justin, Mouse and PJ. I am glad I did....
I've never laughed so hard and so much in 30 minutes !

It started the minute I sat down, recounted my day at work and Jatin made a ''smart-ass'' remark....

We talked about games we played in elementary school... hahaha... PJ enlightened us with the different shapes and animals you can make !

I found some examples on the internet.....

Old Friends

Nothing beats a nice catch-up time with old friends after a long day.

What's new ? What's up ? What married life is all about, financially independence , last year at university, going to church blah blah blah....

Its been 9 years knowing Wai and Astrid... hopefully 90 more years to go...

Another late night

Its one of those days, I went home at 2am.. WHY ? I had supper with the Barker Boys...

7.15pm : Dinner at OHYSH ( a small Japanese eatery tucked away in the lanes between to CentrePoint and that building ( the one with Spotlight, maybe spotlight is not there anymore ! I walked away from that eatery smelling like I worked there for 8 hours....oo... the smell of fried stuff.... YUCKS

8.05pm : Lanning begins at Katong Shopping Center. Instead of Generals. Its Battlefield 2
Battlefield_2_Cover_gross[1]

Its brainless, I track you down ( oh.. wait before that, get yourself a tank and shoot the shit out of everyone ) and kill and capture the flag.... hahahahahaha

10.55pm: We eventually had a round of WARCRAFT III - Frozen Throne before heading for Justin's house and supper at Jalan Kayu.

12-ish am : The Guys sat down to talk about KIDS ! ( yes their KIDS )and Mouse came up with definite plans on how to 'deal' with his daughter's boyfriend. HA HA HA...
Jatin tried his hand at fortune telling, predicting which of us will get married early ! Justin was happy to have his egg-prata. Cass and I just sat and listen..

We talked about Cars, ( and the Blink Blink Caddy that mouse wants ! ) We decided that Mouse's first car is a Honda Odyssey for his 5 kids. Jatin and his Altis ( engine replaced ) and Cass with her Bentley...

This is why I got home at 2am....

A few friends are coming to visit Singapore in September and December.. I am gonigto be busy.. Maybe by then I can afford my very own car ?

For a split second during supper, I thought of the first few times we hung out. Jatin and I were 15 ! Crazy .. all we cared about was partying and the exams... Justin and I in JI, trying to get out of school earlier or just hanging out in the canteen, skipping classes. 8 years later.. we are talking about kids , getting married and cars.... I think this is one true case of Growing up with Friends..

Talking about growing up with Friends.. I am soo proud of Justin ! he has a new blog ! a new begining !

Word from Canada.

From time to time, I find myself saying words like "EH" "mickey" "loonie" and "tonnie". One word I STILL use and can't get rid of using is

INTERESTING

My Canadian friends will know and understand when I use that.... hahaha.. its not always a good thing.. and dont take its surface meaning...

Blogging from a cold cold office ( coffee break ).. its raining ( perfect time to sleep )

i spy and hacked....

I spied and did something crazy today... I googled my dad ! him being a total NON-IT person.. I would expect to have ZERO returns BUT... i found my sister's blog ! hahahahaha..

Here's a snipplet ......

then then then...i packed my room!!! noisy sis and mom are driving me up the wall...for this, i am glad i am leaving for china. u can't have the two of them together. there will be war. all i can say is ... i should have appreciate the peace and tranquility at home more in the past 4 yrs.[celine : when I was in Canada] With my sister ard, the house is upside down.. and noise pollution level is always beyond acceptable decibels! Again, for this.. i am glad i am leaving for china. Mom? She wants to pick on my sis ( sis NEEDS / REQUIRES some scolding abt her messiness)[ celine : I am actually really neat compared to some of my friends.. ahem cough cough and my friends would say that I am neat] but if she does... they will end up quarreling..and if noise level goes beyond dad's limits.. mom gets into trouble with him.. so clever her picks on me instd... to a point that i am so close to getting into fits!! argh!! i told her the seriousness of this... but she laughed.

Hahaha.. Lunch is over.. back to work..

Sundays....

Sundays have a new meaning.. its now a truly a day for rest. While at university, Sundays are days where we try to finish our assignments and studying for midterms or finals. I guess this is one of the perks of corporate world.... A well deserved rest day....

A few of my friends have been talking about Corrine May, Ying Ying even posted about her... Corrine May, Singapore Girl - born and raised... I listened to some of her songs... i like it.. makes a lot of sense and hits close to home..

I feel like a little girl
Trying to conquer the whole wide world
Everybody wants a piece of me And I just don't know where to turn

Daddy wanted to buy me a TV for my room... it was $169.. its quite cheap.. and it will replace my current temperamental TV who switches off on its own when it feels like it... hahahhaa... I thought about it for a second and said.. 'Nah.. I dont need a TV for now..
My sister is gone to Beijing and I have taken over her bedroom as my TV room...*evil laughter*
It was nice taking to Sai on the phone last night...( and Richy and Jenny too ! ) It nice to know that best friends lasts forever. no matter what decisions the other person makes, we will still support each other. We were able to speak our minds and tell the other people frankly what we think on a particular issue...

Can't wait to see her in September....

I started reading regularly again... I have 40 minutes of 'travelling' time on the MRT ( subway ) each day.. Travelling to and from work... I love the feeling of walking with my nose in my book... I walk at my own pace.. I can still nagivate around people, stairs and kids.... hahahahahaha

I caught a movie with Michelle, War of Worlds. Its not too bad.. and witnessed a small 'fight'--( well its more of an argument ) in the theatre. A china chinese dad brought his daughter to watch a Sci-fi, machines and action pack movie, aliens and blood( .... naturally the little girl will have thousands of questions.. and def.. was talking non-stop in the movie. I think the only character that she could identify with was Dakota Fanning.... Another guy sitting behind was really disturbed

This was how the conversation went :

Girl and Dad : Yak Yak Yakitty Yak .....
Guy Behind : Shhhh...... ( after about 15 minutes of dad and daugter yaking )
Dad : She is only 5...
Guy Behind : She really shouldn't be talking in the theatres...
Dad to Daughter : Don't care. just talk......
Guy Behind : What ? Shhh......
Dad : " i cant be bothered, she is five ''
Another guy in the audience.. SHHHHHHHH

I feel that the Chinese Dad is in the wrong..
1 ) you really shouldn't be bring your 5 year old daughter to watch this movie.. blood and evaporated people everywhere.
2 ) and if you want to bring your kid.. you should be able to control your kid and not distrub other guests.
3 ) I understand that you want your kid to follow the movie but you can't be explaining the whole movie while in the cinema !

Quite honestly, I know how difficult it is to have kids and what to watch 'your kind' of movies but I guess its part of parenthood... giving up some of the horror sci-fi for some Harry Potter maybe ?

Harry Potter is coming out in November. I am catching the midnight shows... (when kids are suppose to be bed...) hahahaha....

Singing...... " Little Superhero Girl "

I feel like a little girl
Trying to conquer the whole wide world
Everybody wants a piece of me
And I just don't know where to turn
I've got work piled up to my head
All I want to do is jump into bed
And wash away my troubles with lemonade
Play hide and seek with the boy next door
Take a trip to Singapore and
Imagine how I'll make the world
a better place...............................

Amoebae

I read my book again today... and once again.. I gave this page and what it said a long thought.. it consumed my thoughts for the rest of the day......

Amoebae leave no fossils. they haven't any bones. ( No teeth, no belt buckles, no wedding rings ) It is impossible , there to determine how long amoebea have been on Earth. Quite possibly, they have been here since the curtain opened. Amoebae may even have dominated the stage, early in the first act. On the other hand, they may have come into existenced only 3 days or 3 minutes - before they were discovered by Anton van Leeuwenhoek in 1674. It can't be proven either way.

One thing is certain, however; becasue amoebae reproduce by division, endlessly, passing everything on yet giving up nothing, the first amoebae that ever lived is still alive. Whethere 4 billion years old or merely three hundred, he/she is with us today.

Where ?

Well, the first amoeba may be floating on his/her back in a luxurious pool in Hollywood, California. the first amoeba may be hiding in among the cattails roots and peepers in the muddy shallows of Siwash Lake. the first amoeba may recently have dripped dwon your leg. Its pointless to speculate.

Book : Even cowgirls get the blues, Tom Robbins.

Hmmm..I wonder... how can anything so small, so insignificant, yet be significant still be so small. Are there people in our lives that walk quietly in and quietly out again without us noticing ? Maybe the stranger that sat opposite my breakfast table is the CEO of my dream company. Can I leave earth like the amoebea, leaving no trace of history ( I guess with this blog.. its hard ), or maybe one day I can split myself up and be in 2 places at the same time ?

Hmmmm.... food for the brain..

after a long break..

busy

I am back.... after a really busy week at work... settling into work and finally having a routine to follow again.
For those of you who clicked on my blog to see an update or two.. I am really really sorry.. BUT I am back !

WorkBreak

Since I am so 'stuck at work' and spends so much time at work. I thought I add a picture about work. My learning curve at work is really steep ( i guess its the same for most fresh-grads ). I am learning leaps and I love the challenges thrown to me ! I guess, I can now officially say : I am in the corporate world ! BUT I miss school sooo much....

I guess growing up is something that one cannot avoid and having responsibilities might sound scary but I think I am doing good so far... I guess I am really lucky to have a few people on my work MSN to talk to.. I have a good co-worker that works well in our stressful environment... I have a easy-going boss that I can ask silly questions..I have Ying Ying and Susan in the same building to have lunch with.

ffcast

I watched Fantastic Four with the Barker boys ! nice movie... Mr Fantastic is soooooo intelligent... soooo smart....I am soooo attracted to smart guys ! hahahaha... I am sure PJ will agree with me ! the Boys were just drooling over jessica in the cinema....

paths

Some of my friends are stuck on which roads they have to take in life. Figuring out who is it that they really love ? Where they should go, what they want to do, listen to your heart or your mind ? Should I take this job or the othe ? Should I spend my last dollars on a pair of branded shoes or even saving money for a rainy day or that much desired vacation. Just want to give a shout out to all confused young adults ( myself included ). Go wherever and know that its ok to make a wrong turn, its ok to say 'I am sorry' and know that whatever you do, whatever decision you chose in life.. your friend will be nearby, helping you get through the seemingly ' impossible periods of life' ..

Ice-cream anyone ?

I am off from work, for a good well-deserved weekend....

Boys will always be boys

boys are stupid

Today, a fewboys made me realise and understand the phrase " Boys will always be Boys"

they will always be excited over fast cars, drooling over girls ( even when they have a reallly pretty girlfriend ) and game consoles, LAN parties, jumping into lakes, talking about porn, watch the same action movie 4 times and do things to spike you......... ha ha ha ha

At the end of the day, they are still boys and most of the time, they do silly stuff but they are always cute and they will always be there if you need help, to open the door for you, to pick you up from downtown in the middle of the night and always there to give you a hug when you need one...

Here's to more General and funny actions ... Keep Smiling Guys...
